Idiom: Go against the grain

GO AGAINST THE GRAIN: A person who does things in an unconventional manner, especially if their methods are not generally approved of, is said to go against the grain. Such an individual can be called a maverick.

I just got a call from the Exton office, and the person on the other end of the phone told me that the pics that I took of the Huntsville colleagues needed to be removed because they didn't meet the company's standards of professionalism. So, it was unacceptable that some colleagues had a telephone to their ear, their hands behind their head, etc. The acceptable way to photograph a colleague is to put them in front of a wall and snap their pic facing forward. "They can, of course, smile, if they want to," she told me. Oh! Good!
