A new driver in the family

Strat got his driver's learning permit today. A cute picture! He is now free to learn how to drive. I think we will start today, just around the house so he can get used to the feel of the car. He shows very little interest in driving, but I made him get it now because he has to take Driver's Ed next semester. I'm sure having your permit is a requirement. Also, I am going to make sure all three boys can drive a stick shift.

While we were at the DMV, there was a 15-yr-old girl who was taking the test for the 8th time. Yep. Eight. You are allowed to miss 6 questions out of 30. When Strat and I were wrapping up our business at the DMV, she turned around to ask the policelady, "Does circular mean, like, a circle?"

I don't think that girl needs to drive.

The other thing that worries me so much is driving distracted. The biggest thing I had to worry about when I was driving was turning the radio up as I went faster (with the windows down, since I didn't have air conditioning in my first car). It never occurred to me to apply makeup while I was driving, or to eat while driving, or any number of other things that today's drivers do while they are driving.

You know I once saw a man reading while driving? Idiot!

When I was in college, a girl died in a car accident because she took a sharp turn too fast. The first-responders said that she had Taco Bell all over the inside of the car. It's just not worth it.

I found this test online, that simulates how well you would do driving and texting at the same time. It's hard! I finally had to stop, and I could never send any texts because I was never fast enough. Try it yourself and see how you do.

Then say a little prayer for Jim and me and we get our first little bird ready for flight.

Take the Texting and Driving Test
